Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons mini review:

DC continues to excel in the animation department with the immensely enjoyable and suitably upbeat Battle of the Super Sons. We are introduced to a Clark Kent/Superman that has had trouble being present for his son Jonathan due to his duties as a member of the Justice League, and this shows a side of the Man of Steel we have rarely seen. Young Jonathan Kent (Superboy) is voiced with a tremendous amount of youthful optimism and gleeful excitement by Jack Dylan Grazer, and his chemistry with Jack Griffo’s reluctant trained assassin Damian Wayne (Robin) is just so much fun to watch as their friendship grows over the course of the film. The introduction of Batman and Gotham City is incredibly satisfying, and it was awesome to have DC voice acting veteran Troy Baker provide the voice of the caped crusader. The plot is relatively straightforward, with Superboy having to join forces with Robin to rescue the Justice League and the world from Starro the Conqueror. It’s this simplicity that makes the 79 minute runtime an absolute breeze to get through. The 3D CGI animation takes a bit getting used to at first, but once your eyes adjust, it’s exuberantly colorful and pure eye candy. Lex Luthor makes an appearance, and while I won’t give away his specific role, I’ll just say I was glad to see him in a certain position of power that DC fans are all too familiar with. The humor was well placed and fitting, particularly a few scenes where Damian and Jonathan are dealing with school bullies. Overall, Batman and Superman: Battle of the Supersons is an irresistibly charming, enjoyable, oftentimes hilarious, and heartwarming entry in DC’s animation catalogue that will have viewers itching for more Superboy/Robin team up films in the future. Between this and Black Adam, I would say DC fans will be eating well this weekend. 🦇🦸🏻
