Spider-Man: No Way Home

(More Fun Stuff Version) Mini Review Sep. 5th

Spider-Man: No Way Home The More Fun Stuff Version delves further into Peter Parker’s personal life getting turned upside down while putting an emphasis on the consequences of his actions and how it hurts the people he cares about most. In the original cut of the film, the identity crisis fallout with Peter’s high school friends was only briefly touched on but in here we get a better understanding of just how fake his classmates like Flash Thompson were when Peter’s public image tarnished by the media. It’s important to remember that in the original comics, Spider-Man would be completely ridiculed by JJ Jameson and that would in turn cause pedestrians to blindly fear him. We get more Matt Murdock doing his lawyer thing and there’s a real sense of ramifications for Peter letting the multiversal villains into Happy’s apartment. The film’s running theme of second chances are hit home perfectly even more with some neat extra dialogue between Andrew and Tobey that explain a few things. The new post credit all the way at the end is a hauntingly emotional gut punch that gives perspective on the effects of Doctor Strange’s final spell. No Tobey vs Goblin rematch, and while that is disappointing, I do understand why they wouldn’t want to drag out the final battle segment, especially since Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is the driving force of this film’s narrative. I get why some of these scenes were cut from the original version for pacing reasons, but I’m happy that we got this more fleshed out edition and hope it receives a Blu-ray release. This version of the film feels more like a proper conclusion to the Homecoming trilogy, giving closure to Peter’s high school days in a somber, poignant, and bittersweet way. In a time when Stan Lee’s legacy is being crapped on by certain movies/shows of recent, it’s nice to be shown what may very well be the last great MCU film for years to come before everything goes completely woke. Either version of the movie works, but if you’re a Spider-Man fan, you can’t miss out!
