JOHN WICK: CHAPTERS 1-3 💥 MY BRIEF NON SPOILER THOUGHTS:

My brief thoughts on the first three entries. The original John Wick film is not just a great throwback to 80s and 90s revenge movies, it breathes new life into modern martial artsaction movies by making the most out of its basic premise. Retired hitman is out for vengeance after some bad guys kill his dog and steal his car. Simple yet effective due to Keanu’s infectious likability and Chad Stahelski’s stylish direction in this fictional neo-noir world. Stahelski uses his skills as a former stuntman to his advantage in crafting exhilarating action sequences that are completely devoid of any shaky cam or jarring quick cuts. It starts with an appropriately somber tone, as John deals with the aftermath of his wife’s death and brutal murder of his dog, which was a final gift from his deceased wife. So, once John is out for blood, the movie is a pure adrenaline rush and the viewer can feel Wick’s anger and rage due to a subtle yet intense performance from Keanu Reeves. The late Michael Nyquist as Viggo was such a smooth and charismatic first villain that gave Wick the perfect push to dispose of all of his nameless henchman. Ian McShane, and Willem Dafoe are both top notch with Lance Reddick’s Charon being the most badass and charming concierge in any movie ever. Overall, the first John Wick is an exhilarating and greatly satisfying action/revenge movie that gave birth to the BabaYagannassaince.

John Wick: Chapter 2 continues the story of the titular character by doubling down on the world building and integral rules of this universe. We finally get to see how the Continental hotel works and the code that must never be broken by its members. The film is far more ambitious than its predecessor, cranking up the violence and ‘gun-fu’ carnage. John Wick Chapter 2 expands on its predecessor's world building and badass gun-fu action scenes. Overall, a rock solid sequel with one of the most badass lines to ever conclude an action film.

With John Wick: Chapter 3, Chad Stahelski heightens the martial arts action mayhem but never loses sight of Wick's humanity. Keanu’s chemistry with Lance Reddick, Laurence Fishburne, and Ian McShane is as fresh as ever as their relationship has come to a pivotal state given the implications of the ending of Chapter 2. Halle Berry was a big surprise in that she kicked a lot of ass and gave some insight into John's backstory even if she could've had more screen time. The film goes even deeper into the rules of the Continental and fleshes out Wick's past in the process. Overall, John Wick 3 is an adrenaline rush of impressively choreographed martial arts action that furthers the story of John Wick and sets up an exciting 4th installment. #johnwick
