Legion of Superheroes (DC Animated Movie) mini review:

The DC Tomorrowverse continues with the story of Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) as she tries to find her place in the universe. After Kara is brought into the futuristic Legion Academy on behalf of her cousin Superman, she must work together with a team of super-powered misfit students at the academy to stop the mysterious Dark Circle. DC continues to boast gorgeous looking animation in this film, as each character and setting is wonderfully well detailed, robustly colorful, and feels like it was taken right out of the comics. This is very much a Supergirl centric story and Meg Donnelly does a fantastic job voicing Kara, harkening back to Nicholle Tom’s iconic portrayal in the DCAU while making this Supergirl feel vibrant and fresh. While he is merely a cameo in this film, Jensen Ackles as Batman continues to be a worthy successor to Jason O’Mara’s (DCAMU) version with his best stories yet to come in this universe. Darren Criss also works great as the Tomorrowverse’s Superman and he acts as sort of a father figure to Kara here, ensuring she doesn’t make reckless or impulsive decisions. The Academy members are a ton of fun to watch, with each of them displaying a different set of bizarre superpowers. Brainiac 5 is a huge standout among the Academy students, and his back and forth rivalry with Kara is quite endearing. I can’t go into any detail regarding the Dark Circle, but I will say it was a pretty interesting direction that was taken with the villains here, one that I particularly admired. This is ultimately a stepping stone movie for Supergirl, showing her grow, mature, and work with unlikely allies to stop a powerful enemy. Overall, while not devoid of predictable story beats or insanely noticeable plot holes, Legion of Superheroes is a highly entertaining and beautifully animated entry into the DC Tomorrowverse with a post credits scene that sets the stage for even bigger things to come. The first comic book movie of 2023 is a winner and one that should unify a divided DC fanbase to celebrate DC’s strengths in animation.
