Before I get crucified in the comments section, I feel as if I need to provide a disclaimer. As a kid, I was obsessed with Buzz Lightyear and the Toy Story series. I used to play with the toys and watch the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie/television show all the time. With that said, I personally felt as if this new film completely betrays a lot of the lore and mythology that should have been drawn from the rich world building of the animated show. Instead we are met with bland supporting characters, unfunny childish humor, and story beats that are derivative of other better science-fiction movies. I can’t stress enough just how tired I am of every single non-MCU Disney movie or show that infuses the awkward MCU-like 2022 modern humor into it. What they did to my boy Zurg in this movie, I seriously almost yelled at the screen. Stop trying to subvert our expectations and make our beloved heroes into soy boys while allowing dull supporting characters to overshadow them in their own movie or show. Warp Darkmatter was a far more badass sidekick than what we got in this. Look, it is visually impressive and the 3D animation along with the sound design is undeniably top notch, but that really isn’t nearly enough to make me invested anymore. Overall, this has to be the most disappointing movie of the year for me, and I seriously have a hard time believing this was Andy’s favorite movie as a kid and not Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins.
