To be completely honest, I didn’t really have any hype for this movie going in, so I’m happy to report that I had a very fun time watching Super Pets. This is essentially a Justice League-lite movie with the pets taking control of the overall narrative. While Dwayne Johnson might’ve been an odd casting choice as Krypto the Super Dog, he did a fine job at being the loyal companion to Superman, and I genuinely appreciate the fact that the relationship between Supes and Krypto had more layers than I was expecting. Kevin Hart as Ace (Batman’s dog in the DCAU) gets a lot of solid character development and his backstory here is fittingly modified from his dog fighting origins in the Timmverse. I think if you have any pets, you will very much relate to the owner/pet dynamic in this film. It’s surprisingly heartwarming and more mature than I had anticipated. The handling of the Justice League in this movie is totally ridiculous and hilarious, for every single hero is an exaggerated caricature of their comic book counterpart. Keanu Reeves as Batman has some of the funniest lines ever uttered by a Batman in a theatrically released film, it was pretty hysterical. Marc Maron as Lex Luthor (one of the greatest supervillains ever) is suitably over the top and cunningly manipulative and I was glad to see his assistant Mercy Graves (DCAU) alongside him. Kate McKinnon is perhaps the scene stealer here as a villainous guinea pig and most of her line delivery was comedic gold. There are tons of Easter eggs throughout the movie that only hardcore DC fans would truly understand. It’s predictable and the second act is perhaps the most unevenly paced portion of the movie. Overall, DC League of Super Pets might suffer from being a bit too long and a disjointed middle portion, but for a movie I wasn’t overly hyped about, this proved to be an entertaining, lighthearted, wholesome, and quite funny discount Justice League adventure that will most definitely satisfy pet owners, kids, and even adults for the most part. #dcleagueofsuperpets
