Both of these films were released this year and have characters and plot points that are relevant for each movie, so it is only fitting I review them back to back. X is a more conventional slasher affair, but thanks to excellent direction and an array of fun characters, it delivers above average execution. It’s very clever how X delves into the unholy, anti-G-d, and sinful ways of producing pornography, with each character sharing different thoughts about the process. The late 70s era of X really reminded me of early Friday the 13th installment vibes with the woods, cabins, and lake. X also has Pearl, who is every bit as creepy and psychotic as she is in her own film. In X, we get some mentions about what Pearl’s life was like when she was younger and what her dreams and aspirations were. In the film Pearl, we get those blanks filled in and I have to applaud TI West and Mia Goth for giving us a mentally insane nut case villain who can be so cruel and off her rocker yet also tragic in a way that really makes you sympathize for her. When you go back and see how Pearl had to deal with a depressing home life and abusive mother, it seriously provides a lot of layers that we rarely see in horror movie villains. The film Pearl takes place in 1918, and I absolutely love how we get to see how life was during WWI and the influenza pandemic. Both X and Pearl are films of the same universe, with Pearl taking place 60 years prior to the events of X, but each film couldn’t be more different in tone and execution from the other. I watched both of these movies today back to back for the first time (X then Pearl) and it was a highly rewarding decision. I look forward to what TI West and Mia Goth have in store for the third installment! #pearl#xmovie
